Over the last 12 years WMS has developed and refined a range of training packages to suit a wide variety of operational areas and needs.
Our practitioner based training significantly enhances the operational competance of officers whose duties may include mammal destruction tasks.
We deliver lecture packages utilizing:
Power Point, Video, Laser Shot, skeletal material, post mortem results and other media to enable clients to vastly improve their understanding in relation to Mammal Destruction:
Safety/Risk Assessment. Weapons. Ammunition. Terminal ballistics. Weapons handling and shooting techniques for hunting. Animal behaviour. Anatomy in 3 dimensions. Stalking. Reactions to shot. Follow up and safe approach.
Clients also learn how to assess the real risks in their area of operation, how to equip and train for the main risks identified and how to be prepared for the unexpected.
Training also embraces live firing at appropriate ranges to build on the lecture packages, WMS demonstrates the techniques being taught, then clients practice in the methods most appropriate for their needs.
We have identified the four main factors which contribute to perceived failure in quickly resolving Large Mammal Incidents:
Officers may have insufficient confidence, training and knowledge relating to the overall subject.
Officers may incorrectly assume that an animal shot in the "head" or in the heart/chest area will immediately fall down and die.
At 1-15 metres, AI Rifles, MP5's and G36's all shoot between 3 and 5.5 inches below the point of aim. This is one of the factors identified as the reason many simple brain shots fail on large mammals.
Officers may have insufficient understanding of the capabilities and limitations of issue firearms and ammunition in the mammal destruction role.
Live firing sessions include:
Close range shooting and head shots. Practical hunting firing positions. Using aids and supports. Anatomical aimpoints. Stop shots and kill shots. The use of large calibre weapons. Defensive and offensive shooting. Team work in relation to animal despatch.
We use anatomically correct animal targets and realistic scenarios which maximise both the impact and learning experience.
Fast moving situations involving following up large mammals seldom allow for "Prone position, apply windage and elevation and wait for 3 second exposure," a point made by one Rifle Instructor.
Our Laser Shot Hunter Education package contains hundreds of fully interactive video clips which enable hunter to learn anatomy, sight pictures and timing. This practice builds mental images and muscle memory which prove priceless when faced with a difficult tactical situations.
Please see our testimonial page for Police Reviews of our services.
The Association of Chief Police Officers Firearms Review Board and The Home Office Scientific Development Branch are aware of our activities. Please call Graham Smith to enquire.
The HOSDB do not promote us but have said "We leave it up to individual Constabularies to consider additional input from outside agencies." We can provide additional references to potential clients by request.
Individual Constabularies are now charged with the task of achieving operational competance in all duty areas through the provision of legally supportable practitioner based training.
WMS have 25 years practical experience of hunting, culling, humane destruction, International Wildlife Management, safari's, exotic animals and "Making the shot!"
