In the modern zoo world, staff must be relevantly trained in all work related areas.
You cannot spray weeds, drive machinery or undertake specialised operations without legally supportable training preparation and practice. Institutions must demonstrate appropriate "Duty of Care" for both clients and employee's.
Any staff expected to handle and use firearms for pest control or humane despatch need relevant training. Without it their actions may be legally unsupportable and uninsured!
WMS offers specialised Zoo Staff Training packages in the use of firearms for animal control and management. We can train in situ or ex situ at civilian, police or military ranges.
The training is based on a simplified version of the very specialised training we provide to Police Firearms Officers.
The class room day covers: Safety, risk assessment, team work, rifles, shotguns, ammunition, ballistics, shooting techniques, anatomy, animal behaviour, reactions to shot, stalking, follow up and approach, gun care etc.
The range day covers: Safety, basic gun handling, sighting in, shooting positions, target aquisition, trigger control, ranges from 1 to 100 metres, ballistic demonstrations with rifle and shotgun ammunition, team work and moving targets etc. We use anatomically correct animal targets.
We take staff far beyond the basic range day of loading and firing weapons at plain black targets.
After one of our courses and with regular practice, we expect students to be able to control and resolve difficult situations safely through proper understanding of safety, weapons, anatomy and procedures.
