What Public transport options?
Clients have arrived by planes, trains and automobiles. Nearest serious airports are Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol. The nearest rail station is Caersws on the Mid Wales line with Shrewsbury, Birmingham International and Euston (3.45 hrs) en route. Local taxis are available for collection and drop off.
What’s WMS Steel Challenge like?
The site is an upland estate of 5000 acres of 350 to 750 metres elevation and is mainly an extensive sheep farm. The main shooting area is in the centre and has porta cabin facilities complimented by the “Rally Centre” which is a fully serviced building available for larger shooting events.
Who can shoot there and do I need a firearms licence?
Primarily, people who own valid Firearms Licences and rifles suitable for pest control, hunting and target shooting. People without their own licences may shoot our “Estate rifles” under the estate rifle exemption subject to being of sound mind and over 18 years of age subject to prior arrangement. We don’t charge for use of the rifles, but do charge retail rates for any ammunition used. Please contact us for more detailed information on younger people, other exemptions and relevant legislation.
What calibres can be shot legally / safely?
If you can legally own it with appropriate ammunition it can be shot safely at WMS subject to standard “Safe person, Safe practice, Safe Kit & Safe Range” procedures.
How much ammunition will I need?
Better to bring too much, than too little. Small calibres 200 + rounds, medium calibres 100-200 rounds and large calibres 60 to 100 rounds is a good rule of thumb. We don’t sell ammunition on site for clients rifles so call us if you have further requirements.
What sort of scope is best?
We can work with anything from 1.25 power to 25 power normally. You don’t actually need scopes over maybe 12 power for anything but the longest range shooting. More power helps with spotting, but reduces field of view (safety) and transmitted light. Most decent scopes can be wound up, down and sideways and still return to zero if you want to try longer range shooting.
Do I need ballistic data and a tactical scope?
These are needed with all serious long range shooting. We carry a range of general purpose data for the more common calibres and can help on the day. Try it with what you have first, then buy more kit if you need to.
What about local accommodation?
We have a list of good local accommodation suggestions for clients which we can email for your reference.
Do I need a 4 x 4?
No but low slung sports cars may not be ideal to travel up around the range. We can ferry clients around if expensive cars with low spoilers seem best left at the bottom car park.
What sort of clothes should I wear?
Check out the forecast in advance and dress for hill walking, stalking according to the season. We can get pretty much 4 seasons in a day! Decent boots are a good idea, we don’t wad through much mud (unless you really want to) but we do have dust, lots of water and what the sheep leave behind.
What about food and drink?
You need to bring lunch and any snacks you want during the day and any special drink or dietary needs you or your group have. We supply tea, coffee, hot water and basic drinking water as required by clients.Be aware of the need to stay hydrated to aviod headaches and to stay alert and fresh while shooting. Lots of water will help!
If you are on any medication, allergy treatments, etc do bring them and make your guide aware on arrival to allow us to be of the most assistance if needed.
